Discover First-class Japanese Fine Art at Shukado

Shukado offers an outstanding collection of ukiyo-e, Japanese paintings, scrolls, and screens. Our shop owner, is an expert of Japanese fine art with 40 years of experience.

Ukiyo-e or "the Pictures of Floating World" are among the most widely known and admired art of the Edo period. (17th-19th Century) Some prints were created in the Meiji era. We have ukiyo-e artwork of famous artists including Hiroshige, Hokusai, Utamaro, Kunisada, Kuniyoshi, Toyokuni, Yoshitoshi, Kiyochika, Hasui, Yoshida Hiroshi and more.

Most of the paintings are from the Edo period (17th -19th Century) created in the form of Kakejiku or hanging scrolls. We also have some framed paintings from the post-war period. We have a variety of Edo period pieces from the Kano school, the Yamato-e school, the Rimpa school, and the Maruyama Shijyo school. We also offer paintings from the Meiji, Taisho and Showa era by famous modern artists.

Byobu or folding screens were originally used to separate rooms and as enclosures for intimate spaces. Byobu literally means "wind wall". Many luxurious Byobu for decorative purposes were created between the Azuchi-Momoyama period and the Edo period. (16th-19th Century) The byobu in the photo was created in the mid Edo period.
